No, there is no preventative other than keeping things clean.

That could be. I would get the shop vac out and get vacuuming.

And replace the pine shavings or whatever you have on the floor.

You need to be VERY VERY thorough.. red mites are the worse and at best they recommend burning down the whole coop… does that mean you have to?.. no, but you cannot slack for 1 minute. You must stay on top and if there are chicks not fully feathered remove them and dust do not permethrin treat them if they do not have feathers. First you need to know that mites absolutely love cool damp dark places. Most of them do not come out during the day so if you see this many during day it’s worse at night. Your chickens will die from a very slow death. From a sickness because red mites are blood suckers. They mainly feed at night while chickens are roosting because it’s dark and chickens cannot see so they do not move. They are an easy target.

You need to buy a liquid and sprayer you need to also buy barn lime NOT DE.. and you need to douse your coop in every single nook and cranny roost nest box etc etc inside and out everyday for 3 days then hit it hard again on day 5. After day 5 when all dries wearing a mask or scarf over nose/mouth dust the nest boxes dust the roost bars and every spot you can dust. Throw out a heavy amount on floor. And rest a few days. Then if you cannot see them or signs of them back off just a Bit. Spray heavily once a week and barn lime really good. If it rains heavy spray outside and lime inside.. just stay on top of it. If you want to buy elector psp that’s your choice it does work the best but it is very expensive and you’d have to wait for shipping and honestly you don’t have time to spare. I wrote so much I forgot what I’ve all said so if you have any questions feel free to ask but please remove all birds until you can start treating

Like I said treat heavy red mites are a nightmare and will kill your whole flock. Spring is the worse when it’s so wet and rainy
