How to Make a Backyard Chicken Coop

Hey guys! Wanted to share the progress on our very first chicken coop. Still lots to do. We’re picking up four black australorps in a couple weeks and their brooder is all set and ready to go. Super excited! My daughter and I have spent every day doing plenty of researching and planning, it’s been a year now that we’ve been serious about wanting to raise chickens.

Looks great. I am new to raising chickens as well. Have 8 three week old chicks in brooder box now. Researching different coup designs. Do you have plans for nesting area?

I have a similar setup with sand in the bottom and in the hen house. Also I covered the entire run so there’s no wet feet no mud. Hardware cloth is along the top as well as the sides and 12″ into the ground.

how do you get inside to gather eggs and clean

There’s a exterior egg box on the back side and on the big side to the right are huge double doors fhat open up the whole width. I just scoop out the poop under the roost. I’m older and wanted it coop that I didn’t have to climb in to clean. Highly recommend sand.

Looks great. Be sure to run hardware cloth around the outer perimeter and staple it to the bottom board. Cover with dirt. As predators will try and dig at the corners to get in. Good Luck!

absolutely! We have a fox den on our place and have never had a issue. I know they know the chickens are there and have cased that coop. But, with all the right precautions in place no worries.

Just a suggestion, but if this is going to sit on the ground maybe put treated lumber against the ground

Looks good though
