How early and how often do you candle your eggs?

Ready to try our hand at incubating.

Very new to this. Need some help – guidance and google is overwhelming. The eggs are 1-2 days old, have been upside down since we gathered them. I checked that the incubator is working, and it will turn them 4 times a day. First question…. when should I put them in the incubator? And when do I “candle” them? Pretty sure they’re all fertilized as we have one rooster and six hens and they were in the coop for 4 straight days.

Candle them on day 5 or 7, also next time use pencil on the eggs marker is no good. I usually put my eggs in the incubator in the morning time but what ever works best for you really. I like to make a note on a calendar on what day and time I put them in the incubator, this also helps me to keep track when the lockdown will begin.

It can, but with some luck things can still work out! Sharpie can soak through the shell of the egg and lower hatch rate. Just remember for next time! You got this!

Well that’s good to know, glad it’s worked out good for you! I’ve just read that it can soak through the shell and definitely not good if it dose, so I’ve just always use pencil. Hopefully it works out for her like it has for you!
