Curled Toes in Chickens

25

We got 4 of these little silkies and noticed this one at tractor supply with its toes curled. We took it bc we knew they wouldn’t give it the care it needed. We found out it’s called curled toes? Well we taped its feet up to see if it would help…. is this way okay or is there a better way to fix its feet. It walks and runs like the rest but I’m sure it can be painful.

it’s just paper medical tape from the hospital.. I always took what ever was left on the tray cause they would have to throw it out. Couldn’t take it to another patients room. It sticks good to their feet and peels off without hurting them to change to clean tape.

I used medical tape because i had it. It worked really well. She also had splay leg but we fixed that first and then worked on the feet. She had a very hard hatch and I never thought she would live. She is a year old this month and lays a beautiful blue egg.

I think painters tape may work if you have it.. It’s just that medical tape doesn’t stick the skin as bad. You put it sticky side up and spread the foot out on it, then put a piece on top. Push it down around the toes to encase real well. Trim being careful not to cut a toe. The tape is sticking more to itself and doesn’t rip the skin when you pull it off to put clean tape on. I would change her once a day because stepping in poop really builds up on the bottom and makes it hard to walk. Not even a week and her feet were perfect.

Look up splay leg too for some diagrams on how to set its feet and legs. This often will happen on slippery surfaces. Make sure it’s got something that is not slippery for its feet. Use something like puppy pee pads non scented) or rubber shelf liners from the dollar store. Do not use slippery newspaper. Thanku for helping it. Utube may have some good videos…look up chicken chick too. She has lots of info on facebook page in her file section. Thanku for helping look after her.

Just an FYI – my understanding is that neither curled toes nor splay legs are painful in themselves but rather they cause quality of life issues (inability to walk, perch, etc). Both are most likely to be successfully fixed the earlier you tape them up.

They can be related to dietary deficiencies (vitamins b & e, selenium) or illness in the parent birds or in the chicks themselves, injury, genetic defects, or incubation problems.

With starting a little later you may have to bind the legs and toes longer. I’d remove the wraps after 2-3 days and see how effective they’ve been, then rewear if necessary. Perfectly straight toes aren’t essential as Michele shows above, but they do need to be able to walk on the bottom of their feet rather than the sides.
The splay leg is the more serious and pressing issue. With splay legs they won’t be able to walk at all and will likely have a horrific life… euthanasia is generally the best option if you can’t repair the problem.

We just taped our silkie foot with painter’s tape for 2 days and it worked perfect. The tape was hard to get off. We soaked its foot in warm water and it finally came off

Aww. It has little slippers! I’d love to know how to fix this. We had one at work last year like this. It broke my heart.
